Manga for Beginners Chibis
By: Christopher Hart

Easy step-by-step directions and interesting explanations make this book a must have for any fan of Manga, or drawing in general. Christopher Hart provides a detailed description of the differences between Chibis and normal Manga characters in a fun and informative way. Chibis, for those who don't know, are the the unbelievably cute characters and creatures of Japanese comics characterized by their huge eyes and chubby little bodies. The first 40 or so pages give beginner artists or new Manga enthusiasts a fantastic introduction to the world of illustrating adorable Chibi characters and props, while the rest of the book serves as a great guide once you’ve mastered the basics.

As someone unable to draw even a straight line and unfamiliar with Manga, Manga for the Beginner Chibis: Everything You Need to Start Drawing the Super-Cute Characters of Japanese Comics, provided me with all the skills and knowledge necessary to draw basic Chibi characters. The more complex and detailed illustrations, however, remained beyond my limited ability. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in creating their own Manga comics or illustrations, or just learning a new skill.

Second Review:

Manga for the Beginner aims to teach its readers to draw the characteristic “chibi” figures from Japanese manga.  Written and illustrated by Christopher Hart, it includes a basic instructions chapter and plenty of different character and animal designs, complete with descriptions and instructions.

Despite its name, Manga for the Beginner is not a book I would recommend for a beginning artist.  Although its finished results are excellent and often gorgeous, the actual instructions and demonstrations are a little sparse.  I enjoyed the analysis of various nuances of the chibi drawings, but they could very easily confuse someone new to drawing.  For someone with a little experience, however, Manga for the Beginner could certainly be a helpful guide, and I would recommend it for anyone seeking to further improve their manga-drawing skills.
