In her first book for teens, the author of The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler, provides a collection of moving, inspiring, and enlightening fictionalized memoirs of teenage girls from around the world. It covers a wide range of issues facing girls today, including body image, sexual slavery, abortion, and, of course, boys. Through her stories, dialogues, and poems, Eve shows girls how they should be proud of who they are, instead of being embarrassed about all of the wonderful and trying things that come with being a young woman. One of the key points I am an Emotional Creature focuses on is not apologizing to anyone for being yourself, something that all girls should take to heart.
I loved this book. The short passages enable you to have a taste of a variety of cultures, issues, and personalities, while leaving you wanting even more. Eve also manages to impart important lessons about self-confidence and societal pressures without seeming preachy or overly moralistic. I felt I could identify with the girls portrayed in the book, and was shocked to learn about some of the things that go on in the U.S. and other parts of the world. I am an Emotional Creature is a powerful, well written book that I would recommend to any teen going through a tough time, or just looking for a great read.
